Volunteers needed for buckthorn removal at Spring Lake Regional Park

Great River Greening needs dozens of volunteers to help protect a popular Scott County park during its Spring Lake Regional Buckthorn Removal event June 5.

You may have never heard of buckthorn, but Green River Greening says it is threatening Spring Lake Regional Park in the heart of Scott County.

Buckthorn was first introduced to Minnesota in the mid-1800's as a popular hedging material. Shortly after it was found to be very invasive in natural areas by taking light, nutrients and mositure from native plants. Buckthorn also serves as a host to pests and fungus.

The nursery industry stopped selling Buckthorn in the 1930s but its hardiness has kept it alive in many older neighborhoods across the state and in areas like Spring Lake Regional Park.

According to Great River Greening, the fast growth of Scott County is putting great stress on the county's ecological resources. They are dedicated to protecting the green spaces in the county.
